Storytelling is an integral part of FolkWeek. This year, we welcome some of the country’s finest exponents: the charismatic DEBS NEWBOLD and MIKE O’CONNOR & BARBARA GRIGGS.
Debs offers two of her popular one woman tour de forces including King Lear Retold.
“Emotional, immersive and fun…Newbold is a master of words and space” ★★★★★ – Views from the Gods
“Exciting and unique. Debs Newbold pulls down the spirit of Shakespeare” ★★★★ StageTalk Magazine
“Terrific. Brilliantly igniting our imaginations” – Patrick Spottiswoode, Shakespeare’s Globe
Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs are with us for the week. Mike’s epic show Odysseus Dreaming is the original tale of tales, one of the foundation stories of Western literature. Starting with texts by Homer, Virgil, Dante and Tennyson, Mike has crafted the epic tale and added music from Barbara Griggs in a formula that is modern, accessible and dynamic.
Mike offers Cornish stories and Storytelling workshops on the use of ‘heightened speech’ and ‘integration of music and story’ and will appear with Barbara at a wide range of events through the week.
Then there’s Talks and Tales with Janet Dowling who offers “Not just another Devon Ghost Story Book”- the collection and retelling of Devon Ghost Tales and “Lust and Revenge: the passion of the night sky.” Greek constellation myths retold using Urania’s Mirror in a candlelit Victorian theatre box.
Janet also offers her popular Workshops on “How to learn a story to tell” and “How to tell a story.”
Tom Goodale hosts twice daily storycircles and the popular late night stories at the Woodlands Hotel.
