Mikey Kenney
Mikey Kenney has taken up residence as a quietly influential figure within the emerging revival of the English experimental folk scene winning audiences over with his warm energy and dynamic musicality. His 2025 album Tiny Little Light captures the essence of that alternative musical spirit: an exciting and innovative voice for our times.
Mikey Kenney is a respected fiddle player, singer, songwriter and composer from Liverpool, and a versatile multi-instrumentalist who frequently performs many of the parts on his recordings, including banjo, mandolin, guitar and melodeon.
Occupying the space of a musical outsider, Kenney is widely recognised as an important conduit for English and Irish traditional fiddle music in England’s Northwest. He was formerly musical director of the Lancashire Youth Folk Ensemble and is currently Vice-Chair of Comhaltas Liverpool. Alongside this traditional work, he composes progressive original music; his last two releases, Counsel of Owls and The Reverie Road, both received 5/5 reviews from fRoots magazine.
Tiny Little Light (2025) brings together original fiddle tunes with songs rooted in traditional forms but expanded through adventurous arrangements and instrumentation. Kenney considers it his most fully realised work to date. He will tour the new material in 2025 with various ensembles. In addition to his solo work, he is in high demand as a collaborator and session musician across folk, experimental and contemporary music scenes.
‘A Bold, Big-Hearted Triumph – an album chock-full of musical delights.’ KLOFMag reviewing Tiny Little Light
