A packed and varied programme of talks, film and presentations
Mostly based at the Arts Centre (Manor Pavilion) in the heart of town, our talks programme delves deep into folk culture and traditions with insightful speakers and engaging sessions.
Highlights include
● Barry Goodman: A Folk Polymath? A reflection of a life in folk from 1970 to the present day, with songs, pictures and stories. From organising folk clubs and festivals to Morris dancing, calling for dances, singing, songwriting and recording, Barry Goodman will take you on a journey through the diverse elements of his career in the world of folk music, dance and song.
● Barry & Gill Goodman: Down the Canal. The story of Britain’s canals over the last 250 years, from the building of the first commercial canal to the revival of the waterways for leisure. Including songs are from “Where the Working Boats Went” show by Life and Times.
● The Bagpipe Society: Open illustrated talk about the Society, pipes and piping, with a chance to Have A Go
● James Frost: Beelzebub in the mummers play
● James Frost: The Hobby Horse
● Martin Graebe: Down the Pub with Baring-Gould. Sabine Baring-Gould liked to go to the pub. He knew that it was a place where men would meet and, frequently, sing after their day’s work. There are several instances of his staying overnight in small country pubs in Devon and Cornwall and hearing songs from the singers he met there. In this presentation Martin Graebe talks about some of these occasions, looking in depth at a visit to the Saracen’s Head, at Two Bridges in the middle of Dartmoor on a January night in 1890. And there will be a few songs.
● Matt Quinn: In the Roud live podcast recording.
● Mike Bettison: Folk Collectors in Teesdale, County Durham.
● Trudgepig Folk Theatre present The Wickerwork Man, a mumming play version of The Wicker Man.
There’s lots more to be announced as we move further into 2026, so keep an eye out for updates.
