Recovered Songs from the Crimean War
This is a unique and powerful collaboration bringing together an extraordinary line-up of folk musicians to breathe new life into words written during the Crimean War of 1853–56.
Drawing on poems published in local newspapers by ordinary Victorians responding to the conflict, the project transforms these long-forgotten voices into moving new songs that speak across the centuries.
Created with Professor Simon Rennie of the University of Exeter and developed at Halsway Manor, the performance features Nina Zella, Jackie Oates, Granny’s Attic, Benji Kirkpatrick, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, Saul Rose, and members of the Ukrainian Kozachky Choir — Anna and Kate Pyshniuk and Mariya Hrashchenko — in a remarkable meeting of history, folk song and contemporary resonance.
